NORTH DEVON, ENGLAND

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Early engagement with consultants was made to specify an asset BEBO precast concrete arch for the North Devon Link Road project. Our continuous collaboration with the end contractors enabled us to overcome every challenge through a customised, precast modular solution.

Our engineering team were challenged to produce a bespoke design incorporating a traditional masonry structure effect, whilst keeping the benefit of a high-quality, off-site manufactured, modular solution. The final structure was a 30m span, T94 asset BEBO Arch, installed over a live carriageway. It was essential to maintain the operation of the existing carriageway, which is a strategic route across North Devon. Any disruption would have caused lengthy diversions and had a detrimental effect to social value. Pigmented concrete created coloured parapet walls, adding a beautiful aesthetic touch to this unique project.

PROBLEM SOLVED

The challenge: Provide a safe crossing point for a local road across a busy dual carriageway, while allowing the existing road to remain operational.

The solution: Our asset BEBO Arch structure was installed on site, above the existing dual carriageway. The new structure created a safe crossing point for a local road, improving health and safety. The new arch enables the traffic to continue along the critical route that serves much of the North Devon tourism industry.

ESG

There were many ESG considerations during each stage of this project, as follows:

  • Local bridge aesthetic - the new structure had to blend into the environment and not feel out of place, contributing to the structural heritage of the surrounding area.

  • Wildlife consideration - through bespoke wall panel solutions to accommodate bat roosting boxes.

  • Driver’s fatigue - asset BEBO arches reduce driver’s fatigue by providing structural differentiation.
