PROJECT OVERVIEW
The existing A30 road (based in Cornwall, connecting Chiverton to Carland Cross) required dualling, to increase its capacity within a strategic location. Due to high traffic volumes driven largely by tourism, this project required construction of a new road whilst maintaining operation of the A30 route. Numerous underbridge crossings were required on the project to promote local transport and community connectivity.
We were approached to design and supply a series of structures to facilitate this requirement:
asset BEBO Arch: 4x concrete arch structures (12m spans, varying lengths underneath the main A30 dual carriageway).
asset VSoL Wall: 7x rectangular panel asset VSoL walls used as end treatment solutions to the asset BEBO arches and beam bridges.
PROBLEM SOLVED
The A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross for client National Highways was a challenging build, due to maintaining traffic flow on the existing A30 road during the build. We devised an installation sequence to build the structure in two halves, by utilising temporary sheet piles.
The aim was to retain the carriageway to allow traffic to continue with a traffic switch, transferring the traffic onto half of the new structure before finalising the asset BEBO installation and opening the complete carriageway. Our standardised asset VSoL wall designs also enabled interchangeable panels on site, which helped to facilitate repeatable manufacturing.
ESG
This project relied heavily on local connectivity, providing significant social value to the surrounding areas. By minimising local community disruption, we were able to keep the road open during installation due to the modular nature of our concrete products. This allowed for an expediated and staged construction in order to keep the busy route open.
