LITTLE HAMPTON, WEST SUSSEX

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Hampton Park, a new housing estate based in Little Hampton, West Sussex, required an arch structure within the wetlands area of the site. The purpose of the structure was to accommodate a carriageway, shared cycleway / footway and associated verges and embankments. The asset BEBO Arch E15.5mT (bevel ended), with a span of 14.4m, a 2.9m rise and an arch thickness of 476mm, provides active travel connectivity by linking two phases of the development together.

PROBLEM SOLVED

This project was particularly challenging due to the difficult ground conditions. The modular nature of our asset BEBO Arch proved to be the perfect solution, and was assembled in segments and stitched together using reinforced concrete at the apex. The reinforced embankments utilised lightweight Leca fill to reduce the loading on the sub-structure.

Aesthetically pleasing bevelled concrete arches provide an excellent example of why our technology is used for highway structures, green bridges and within housing developments.

ESG

This impressive concrete structure provides three core ESG benefits to the scheme:

  • Habitat creation – Connecting local wildlife and preserving existing habitats

  • Flood mitigation – The void within the embankment creates capacity in a flood event

  • Social connectivity – Reducing congestion and providing active travel route
